All tests performed with Bonnie and most configuration in single user mode.
1. Per Char Tests - Character read/writes which are a function of drivespeed and CPU utilization. Most drives performance well enough to max out the CPU.
2. Block Test - Reads and writes 8k data blocks to find maximum sustained drive speed.
3. Rewrite - Simulation of normal read/write operations in a normal operating environment and is heavily dependent on drive and OS optimization.
4. Random Seeks - Tries hard to measure disk access time and not be skewed too badly by drive buffering
Micron 3400 5U machines with built in u2w controllers, dual PIII 650's, and Mylex AccellaRAID 250 cards. RAID 5 arrays are built with 5 drives.
BSDI 4.1 cd install, no patches, performance was terrible, RTFM, enabled tagged queueing, enabled soft updates, performance still lacking.
Also tweaked other parameters like rotational delay but no measurable differences.
FreeBSD 4.1-stable, (except 5.0-current on black box). Tests use default drives with _NO TWEAKING_
Softupdates were enabled for some testing and are indicated with the .soft extension after the hard drive
All hard drives are SCSI Ultra2-LVD unless mentioned otherwise. (IBM Ultrastar 18.2GB 7200rpm, Seagate Cheetah 18GB 10k,
